“In 1808 the American ship Topaz, sent a landing party tofind water on this tiny shark’s tooth of rock that rises out of thesea a thousand mile from Tahiti. The landing party scaled the rockyheight and discovered, on a fertile plateau, a small Presbyteriancommunity of middle-aged women, many children and youths, and onevenerable, white haired man, Alexander Smith, sole survivor of theeight mutineers who had taken refuge on Pitcairn’s Island eighteenyears before. “ “The idyllic land of the refugees, the planting of the new community, the shortage of wives, the hatred which arose between white men andnatives, and the death struggle that brought the disaster to the tinykingdom are the elements in this extraordinary island chronicle.” - Little, Brown, and Company
