Signed by Burdett-Coutts to the head of the half-title.
A detailed summary of the prizes offered and awarded at the Whitelands Training Institution. Including a list of the questions given at exams, with examples of the best answers which were subsequently awarded.
Questions given include what advice would you give to young girls as to the care of medicines in a sick-room?, and how would you teach that the possession or want of self-respect is betokened by dress, and that moral habits are influenced by dress?
This volume also includes recipes ideal of a sick person, advice on how to treat scarlet fever and measles, and hints on points of domestic economy.
Offering an insight into education for females in the Victorian era, when their education focused on housekeeping and the care for others.
Angela Burdett-Coutts was an influential figure in Victorian England, one of the wealthiest women in the country. She was a great philanthropist, spending the majority of her wealth on scholarships and endowments. With Charles Dickens she co-founded the Urania Cottage.
CONDITION
In the original publishers cloth binding. Externally, with some marks and discolouration to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Crack to the rear joint. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Pencil marks to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with light scattered spots and handling marks. Inscription to the half-title.
