Truefirst editions of the four novellas which collectively make up Alan Garner's StoneBook Quartet. Before being published by Collins as a 172-page omnibusentitled The Stone Book Quartet in 1979, they were published separately, again by Collins, in slim volumes, across the years 1976-1978. Each of thebooks has front and rear jacket designs by Michael Foreman, who also providedetchings which appear throughout the text.
Thequartet of novellas, set in eastern Cheshire, as so often the case withGarner's work, they feature one day each in the life of four generations ofGarners family and they span more than a century. The narrative sequence ofthe books does not match exactly the publication order.
AlanGarner is an English novelist best known for his childrens fantasy novels andhis retellings of traditional British folk tales, most often set in and aroundhis native area of the North West of England. His other books include TheWeirdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath, Elidor and TheOwl Service. His most recent book, the memoir Powsels and Thrums waspublished in 2024, and, as far as I am aware, he still lives in Toad Hall, inBlackden, Cheshire.
